Istanbul Gelisim University (IGU), in line with its vision for internationalization, hosted an important meeting to foster academic cooperation. On October 7, 2025, Daryl Smith, representative of the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), one of Canada’s distinguished higher education institutions, visited IGU. The visit marked a strategic step toward strengthening academic and cultural ties between the two universities.

Daryl Smith’s visit from UFV’s International Office followed the initial meeting between IGU International Exchange and Cooperation Coordinator Alisa Usubova and UFV during the EAIE Conference held in Sweden on September 9–12, 2025. The meeting was also attended by Scientific Research Projects Coordinator Serap Yeşilkır Baydar, UDIO-K Assistant Specialist Yaren Ergenç, and UDIO-K Assistant Murat Emre Şensoy.

During his visit, Daryl Smith met with IGU’s Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Necmettin Maraşlı to gain insight into IGU’s international vision and potential areas of cooperation. Following the official discussions, a campus tour was organized to showcase IGU’s academic environment and infrastructure.

The meetings highlighted the COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) program implemented by the University of the Fraser Valley. This innovative model aims to foster teamwork, intercultural interaction, and interdisciplinary perspectives through online courses and projects between partner institutions.

Additionally, the potential for student and staff mobility under Erasmus+ was discussed. The meetings explored possible exchange programs particularly within the Department of Business, Faculty of Fine Arts, and Faculty of Social Sciences. Both institutions expressed a strong commitment to broadening and sustaining their collaboration.

At the conclusion of the visit, both universities reached a consensus to initiate the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a bilateral agreement. These agreements are expected to lay a strong foundation for transforming academic cooperation into tangible projects.

IGU Expands Its Global Network

This visit by Daryl Smith marked the first institutional visit from the University of the Fraser Valley to Istanbul Gelisim University. It represents a significant milestone in establishing a lasting and meaningful academic partnership between the two institutions.
IGU continues to underline its internationalization vision by expanding its global collaboration network through such strategic engagements.
